Story of Link : The Illegible scroll of Destiny

~ Scroll I ~

My name is Link. Link of Hyrule. My parents gave me this name because the legendary hero from our world was called like that. They hoped this name could really make me a heros. But there is no hero. You can only become one in the grave, and I wanted to embrace the pleasures of life instead of doing such useless quests and fights.

When I was young, I wasn't very interested in books's knowledge. I was often skipping language et history class. I didn't like to be stuck all the day listening to professors, and I liked roaming in the steppes or huming the fresh air on top of the trees. To enjoy the scent of the daylight and the golden hairs of the beautiful hyrulean girls. That is it, to fully embrace life.
Because I knew that soon those little pleasures would be soon out of hand.

My parents are from an old lineage, guardian of the treasures of the Mana Tree. This giant tree, in the center of our town, is one of the pillar of the world and provide to the world the mana, the source of life and magic. Without the Mana Tree, we would be condemned to die, us, creature of mana.
In order to be protected and have the longest lifespan possible, the Mana Tree offered to the first of his dwellers some items from his own bark, powerful enough to bring peace and order in Hyrule.
My family is proud of being the owner of one of them, keeping it from generation to generation.

For me, it was only a musty old book sitting on a pedestal for ages. Protected by a transparent dome in the middle of a small empty room lost in our domain, it seemed to have never been used for a long time. Also I couldn't understand why to preserve something that would be never used : are we such fool not to read it if it would contain the wisdom of the world?

This was not my parent's opinion, who always reminded me how important was its preservation. I shouldn't touch or open it until it was my turn. As if this stack of dusty scribings were more important than their only son!

However, I was still puzzled by this book, and the more I though about it, the more I wanted to satisfy my curiosity. I was becoming more and more impatient, and "Waiting for some hundred years" wasn't for me an option.

And then it happened.
